*This week, we will write our creative journal entry on Tuesday and share it. We will complete our DEUILI warmup on Wednesday in order to practice our language mechanics skills.  Students will define and analyze the Latin root SCRIB/SCRIBE (which means "to write") on Thursday.  Students should study spelling/vocabulary as well as the 8 parts of speech.  Students will complete an on-demand (choice from packet), practice personification, complete editing practice, and create a story from the pic prompt.  In place of a traditional spelling test, students should use their ten words in a short story or paragraph which makes sense.  Underline words, please.

*Work ethic grades are earned by the level of completion, neatness, effort, and correctness.  If a student does not receive a 100 on a work ethic assignment, he/she is encouraged to read the comments  that I write on the paper, complete the assignment as directed, and turn the assignment back in to be regraded.  Journals and writings are assessed on the amount of critical and creative thinking, the details and feelings included, and the use of effective vocabulary, transitions, sentence structure, grammar, mechanics, and spelling.  When a student receives a "1" on their writing, that is equivalent to "novice" and will be a 69 (or below) in the gradebook.  A "2" is equivalent to a  "apprentice" and a "C", a "3" is "proficient" and a "B", and a "4" is "distinguished" and equivalent to an "A".

*This year in writing we focus on letters, articles, and narratives.  We will improve our vocabulary and focus on writing complete, interesting sentences.  I will be encouraging students to use their "voice" in their writing, while including as much detail, feeling, and evidence as possible to back up their opinion or main idea.

Some students who do not have access to internet were given hard copies of the book Bridge to Terabithia. For everyone else there are two ways to read the book:

  1. 1.www.GetEpic.com/students (Class Code: LQC8327). This can only be used Monday-Friday during school hours. If you try using it at night time or on the weekends, it will prompt you to create an account that cost money. Please do not do this, I do not want families spending any money during this time.
  2. If you are unable to use Epic, there is a PDF copy of the book located in Google Classroom. I will also be reading the chapter assigned for the specific day during our daily zoom chat.

I will be posting a Zoom link in Google Classroom each day. While this is NOT MANDATORY for students to log on, it is a great way for students to ask questions, review assignments, and listen to reading in real time. I will do this every weekday beginning at 1:00. This will last until 2:00 unless students have no questions. In the event that I am unable to do a Zoom on a particular day, I will make a post letting students know, as well as send out a Remind Message!

Hard copies of homework were sent with students last week. These will be returned whenever we return to school. In the event that your child is afraid they will misplace it between now and then, they are more than welcome to email me a picture of their homework, or type their answers on a Google Doc, and share that with me.

Social Studies with Mr. Parmley
In social studies this week students will be completing a social studies reading packet that will cover various topics we’ve covered in class or would have covered had we been in the classroom.

The students should have an answer sheet packet so they can check their answers.  When the students return to school I will collect these for a grade.  The student’s should underline where they found the answer in the passages.

Please continue to check out my teacher webpage and google classroom for updates.
